What Is a Minimally Invasive Surgery?

A minimally invasive gynecologic surgery is a surgical procedure that requires minimal incisions and a quicker recovery period. These procedures require incisions less than an inch in size and use specialized tools such as a laparoscope. The three most common minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries are a hysteroscopy, a laparoscopy, and robotic surgery.

A hysteroscopy uses a small camera or scope to view the uterine cavity without any incisions. The scope is fed through the cervical canal into the uterine cavity, where our team will look for any abnormalities such as bleeding or lacerations.

For a laparoscopy, our team will make a couple of tiny incisions and use a small camera to view the inside of the pelvic area. This allows our team to look for any abnormalities outside of the uterus, such as endometriosis.

Your Women’s Health Arizona provider may also recommend robotic surgery. Our team will use a console to control the surgical tools and get a 3D image of the surgical site. This procedure allows your provider to perform delicate procedures with more precision and a lower risk of infection.

When Is Surgery Required?

Surgery can feel intimidating, and our team is here to help you every step of the way. Certain medical conditions require surgery for effective treatment. Gynecologic Surgeries We Offer In-Office

Offering minimally invasive surgeries in the office allows you to feel safe and comfortable during the procedure. You know the office and you know the team, so you know you’re in good hands. The in-office surgeries available vary by location, so talk with your Women’s Health provider about procedures that are available at locations near you.

Common gynecologic surgeries we offer in-office at Women’s Health Arizona include LEEP procedures, urodynamic testing, colposcopies, and endometrial biopsies. We also offer hysteroscopies, laparoscopies, and robotic surgeries.

LEEP Procedures

Loop electrosurgical excision procedures (LEEP) use a small electrical loop to burn away abnormal cells in your cervix. These procedures prevent cervical cancer by removing precancerous cells before they can develop further. It can be done with or without anesthesia, so talk with our team to discuss your options.

Urodynamic Testing

Urodynamic testing measures how well the bladder, urethra, and sphincters can store and release urine. These tests help to diagnose the cause of urinary incontinence and urination problems. They check for any leaks or blockages that could cause these issues, or if the bladder is contracting when it isn’t meant to be.

Colposcopy

A colposcopy is a medical procedure that allows our team to examine the cervix under a microscope. A colposcopy is typically done after a pap smear reveals abnormal cervical cells. The microscopic examination of the cervix lets our team see what’s going on and check for any visual abnormalities. This procedure doesn’t require any incisions and can be done without sedation, but speak with your provider if you’d like to discuss sedation options.

Endometrial Biopsy

The endometrium is the internal lining of the uterus that plays a key role in menstruation. An endometrial biopsy involves taking a small sample of that lining and running tests to check for abnormalities. This procedure can help diagnose abnormal uterine bleeding, hormonal imbalances, and endometrial cancer.

Nexplanon Birth Control Surgery

Birth Control Procedures

Women’s Health Arizona offers in-office birth control placement and removal procedures as well as non-surgical birth control procedures. Our team will work with you to make the process as comfortable as possible for you. Additionally, our providers can help assist with discussing different birth control methods that would be best for you and your situation. Talk to our team of providers if you have any questions or would like to discuss potential sedation options for the procedure.

IUD Placement & Removal

One form of available birth control is an intrauterine device, or IUD. This small t-shaped device is inserted into your uterus through the vaginal canal. Though slightly uncomfortable, this procedure is painless. The device can help treat hormonal imbalances and medical conditions such as endometriosis, and it can also help prevent pregnancy. Our team offers IUD placement and removal procedures in our office to make the process as smooth as possible.

Nexplanon Placement & Removal

Another birth control option is Nexplanon, which is a hormonal birth control that regulates hormones and prevents pregnancy. The rod-shaped device is inserted into the upper arm, where it gradually releases progestin to control menstruation and prevent pregnancy. Our physicians at Women’s Health Arizona can safely place and remove the device in our office.

Is Anesthesia Needed for In-Office Surgeries?

For minimally invasive gynecologic procedures, sedation and anesthesia vary. Certain procedures require sedation and anesthesia for patient safety and comfort.

Procedures that require anesthesia include:

  • Vulvar Biopsies
  • Uterine Polypectomy (Polyp Removal)
  • Hysteroscopy

Procedures that do not require anesthesia include:

  • LEEP Procedures
  • Colposcopy
  • Endometrial Biopsy
  • IUD Insertion and Removal
  • Nexplanon

At Women’s Health Arizona, your comfort during these procedures is one of our highest priorities. If you’re nervous about your in-office procedure, speak with our team about your options and whether you would like to have the procedure done under light anesthesia.
